JAKARTA - The recovery in the performance of the domestic manufacturing industry has gradually shown improvement from month to month. In May 2021, Indonesia's Manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) managed to break a record by breaking the 55.3 level, surpassing other manufacturing countries such as China, Vietnam, South Korea, and India.

"Not only breaking records, we are optimistic that the increase in Indonesia's Manufacturing PMI which reached the 55.3 level in May 2021 also shows industrial growth in the second quarter of 2021 will return to positive," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, Wednesday (9/6).

The Industry Minister emphasized that the government is determined to continue to strive to create a conducive business climate. This is to maintain and improve the performance of the domestic manufacturing industry so that it can further expand so as to accelerate the national economic recovery.

Disruption in global supply chains during the pandemic causes delays in component delivery, thus hampering the production process. "This condition shows the need for industrial independence in the country which is also in line with the 35% import substitution program in 2022," he added.

The Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier conveyed the importance of the readiness of the domestic component industry. This will increase the competitiveness of its derivative industries in both domestic and foreign markets. (LM)
