JAKARTA – The international tourists' visits have not yet fully recovered in May 2021 following the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2020, the foreign tourists reached 161.84 thousand people, which goes even lower by 3.85% to 155.61 thousand in May 2021.

In a press conference held by Indonesia Statistics (lit. Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS) on Thursday (1/7), most of the international tourists come by land route (97.04 thousand), followed by the sea route (44.53 thousand). Then, the number of tourists using the flight route reach 14.04 thousand. Despite it being the smallest number among all routes, the number of tourists coming through the flight path is soaring drastically from 506 people during the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking the first five months’ numbers into calculation, the total international tourists’ visits clock up to 664,54 thousand. It plummets 77.62% compared to the same period last year of 2.97 million visits.

In May 2021, 51.5% of the foreign tourists come from Timor Leste, amounting to 80.14 thousand people. Malaysian tourists follow with 49.07 thousand people, Singapore 2.51 thousand, and the United States 2.26 thousand. (LK/ZH)
