KPPU keeps an eye on cartel practices in ATM transaction fees

JAKARTA – Indonesian Competition Committee (lit. Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha/KPPU) ensures high awareness of any potential price-fixing and cartel practices in balance inquiry fee and cash withdrawal fee in Link ATM network. Director of Competition and Partnership Advocacy of KPPU, Abdul Hakim Pasaribu, conveys the news in a press conference, quoted Friday (23/7).

It is mentioned that KPPU also extends its supervision regarding the said practices to other inter-bank ATM networks. “KPPU could process the legal enforcement through the initiative mechanism should there be any indication of price-fixing and cartel practices in inter-bank fees among involved parties,” Pasaribu continues.

According to Pasaribu, the surveillance is enforced following reports from several parties regarding the indication of price-fixing and cartel practices in Link ATM. The report was then dismissed as KPPU could not find any evidence indicating that the Link ATM managing party actually exercised the violation when bank users checked their account balance. “The informant has also withdrawn their complaint as the accused has cancelled its plan to charge fees for balance inquiry and cash withdrawal in Link ATM,” he further reveals.

KPPU had asked for clarification from several parties regarding the said illegal practice. The price-fixing and cartel practices violate Law No.5/1999 about Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition. (LK/ZH)
