India removes the anti-dumping duty for Indonesian fibreboard products

27 July 2021 19:38

JAKARTA. The Indian government has rejected the suggestion of anti-dumping duty on imports of plain medium density fibreboard (MDF) products from Indonesia with a thickness less than 6 mm.

This proposition was previously submitted by the Directorate-General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) on July 20, 2021. DGTR proposes an anti-dumping duty of USD 22.47 to USD 258.42/CBM on Indonesian MDF products. This suggestion emerged due to the loss that the local MDF industry had to endure following the MDF import activities from Indonesia.

Through the Ministry of Trading, the Indonesian government then sent out a letter to India to ask for DGTR’s proposition cancellation. “We stated several facts showing that the MDF industry in India was in fact not suffering from any losses as defined in the Anti Dumping Agreement of World Trade Organization,” Muhammad Lutfi, the Minister of Trading, further elaborates.

Lutfi also attached some supporting data, for instance, the export activities for MDF products from Indonesia to India that had been depleted within the last five years. In 2020, MDF export to India was even floored at its lowest level of USD 2.2 million.

Indrasari Wisnu Wardhana, the Acting Director-General of Foreign Trading, hopes that the domestic business owners could further utilise this momentum. “We are encouraging MDF exporters to take advantage of this beneficial occurrence to boost Indonesia’s export activities,” Wardhana states. (KR/ZH)
