Manufacturing sector grows aggressively amid pandemic pressure

JAKARTA - The manufacturing industry made the largest contribution to the increase in Indonesia's economic growth which reached 7.07% in the second quarter of 2021. This sector was the source of the highest growth, which was 1.35%. In this period, the manufacturing sector itself recorded growth of 6.91% despite being under pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) focuses on supporting the manufacturing sector to rise from contraction conditions and return to positive growth, as well as being a contributor to national economic growth. "Although the Ministry of Industry as an industry coach is only supported by a minimal budget, the manufacturing sector is still able to make a maximum contribution," said Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, (6/8).

He conveyed that despite being under pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic that entered Indonesia since 2020, the number of industrial sub-sectors grew very high in QII-2021. These sub-sectors include the transportation equipment industry at 45.70%, followed by the base metal industry at 18.03%, the machinery and equipment industry 16.35%, the rubber goods industry from rubber and plastics 11.72%, and the chemical, pharmaceutical and drug industries. traditional 9.15%.

The manufacturing sector also contributed the largest to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2021, amounting to 17.34%. The top five contributors to GDP in this period were the food and beverage industry at 6.66%, the chemical, pharmaceutical and traditional medicine industries at 1.96%, the metal goods industry, computers, electronic goods, optics and electrical equipment at 1.57%, the transportation equipment industry is 1.46%, and the textile and apparel industry is 1.05%.

The export performance of the manufacturing sector in the January-June 2021 period was recorded at USD81.06 billion and dominated 78.80% of total national exports which reached USD102.87 billion. There was a surplus in the export-import balance for that period of USD 8.22 billion. (LM)
