JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry continues to encourage the development of the sugar industry so that it can be more productive and competitive so that it can meet the needs of the domestic market towards self-sufficiency, especially for national sugar consumption. Various programs and policies have been implemented, including for the revitalization program and spurring investment policies in these critical sectors.

"The sugar industry is also one of the strategic sectors for the country, because it is a commodity that has an important role for food security efforts and increasing economic growth of the Indonesian people," said Plt. Director General of Agro Industry, Ministry of Industry, Putu Juli Ardika in Jakarta, Tuesday (5/10). On Friday (1/10), Plt. The Director General of Agro Industry and his staff made a working visit to the sugar factory of PT. Sukses Mantap Sejahtera (SMS), which is located in Dompu, West Nusa Tenggara.

In order to encourage increased productivity, PT SMS is committed to continuing to develop the capabilities of farmers with training programs and knowledge related to sugarcane cultivation. Currently, PT SMS has succeeded in planting sugar cane in its own plantation area of ​​2,518 hectares out of a total HGU of 5,500 hectares. In 2021, from the total area of ​​sugarcane plantations, both on land and as a result of partnerships, 4,298 hectares can be harvested for sugar production, 2,450 hectares and the rest for seeds.

Plt. The Director General of Agro Industry is optimistic that the productivity of PT SMS will contribute to meeting the needs of the domestic market, especially in eastern Indonesia. In 2021, the need for GKP will reach 2.8 million tons. (LM)
