JAKARTA – The 2021 Business Competition Index (lit. Indeks Persaingan Usaha/IPU) in Region VII of Indonesia Competition Committee (lit. Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha/KPPU) climbed 0.19 points higher to 4.81 from 4.65, capped at 7. Specifically, the said regions with these gains are Yogyakarta and Central Java, whose indexes rise from 4.9 to 5.39 and from 5.11 to 5.39, respectively.

In the press release quoted Monday (13/12), Hendry Setyawan, Head of the Office of Region VII of KPPU, explained that IPU is an instrument to measure the perception of business competition level in a specific region by conducting a survey to several stakeholders. “In the National Medium-Term Development Plan (lit. Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional/RPJMN) 2020-2024, it was stated by the end of the plan, the index is targeted to reach level 5, which is the category of very high business competition (score range of 4.51-5.50),” he elaborated further.

The business sectors that are fueled by extreme competition in Yogyakarta and Central Java include agriculture, forestry, fishery, accommodation, food and beverage, and education centre businesses. “In Yogyakarta, business sectors that are perceived as less competitive are gas and electric supply, transportation and warehouse, mining, and drilling,” Setyawan added.

According to Setyawan, the increased IPU indicates a positive signal in the economic recovery in the said provinces amidst the COVD-19 pandemic. (LK/ZH)
