JAKARTA. PT Kererta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) reported the volume of goods transported through the rail tracks reached 50.9 million tons in 2021. It was 12.7% higher than the volume of transported goods observed in the previous year.

Joni Martinus, VP of Public Relations of KAI, stated that the said increase resulted from several collaborations initiated by the KAI with other companies. “In 2021, in which the COVID-19 pandemic still haunted us, KAI kept optimising the goods transportation by continuously collaborating, engineering operation patterns, and reaching out to new partners,” he explained in the official release.

Coal transportation was still the highest contributor to the logistic sector of KAI in 2021, with the total volume of 38.2 million tons, equal to 77.1% of total transported goods volume. Then, container transportation followed with 4.1 million tons or 8% of total goods. The next commodities are the cement of 3.4 million tons of 6.8%, fuel oil of 2.2 million tons or 3.4%, and other goods transportation.

Other than joining forces with more freight transport partners in 2021, KAI also connected a strategic path to fulfil the logistic needs in 2021. For instance, this included connecting the rail tracks to the Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya.

This year, KAI will keep focusing on its performance in goods transportation. This decision is taken as the goods transportation is the supporting pillar of the business while the passenger transportation sector is recovering. (KR/ZH)
