Import substitution of sports equipment exceeds target of 22%

JAKARTA - The miscellaneous industry is one sector that has great potential in import substitution efforts in the non-oil and gas processing industry. The miscellaneous industry includes the jewelry, game equipment and children's toys sub-sectors, as well as the sports equipment industry.

"In the achievement of the import substitution program in the first quarter until fourth quarter of 2021, the realization of various industrial imports decreased by 17 percent," said the Ministry of Industry's Director General of Small, Medium and Multifarious Industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita in Jakarta, Thursday (27/1).

Reni said the figure was quite encouraging. Among the three sub-sectors of the miscellaneous industry, import substitution for sporting goods industry commodities reached 37% or IDR75.8 billion.

"This means, meeting the target of 22% of IDR94.3 billion of the reference import value in 2019 of IDR120.8 billion," she said. Meanwhile, the import substitution program in the jewelry industry reached 4% and in the game equipment and toys industry it was around 18%.

The achievements of the import substitution program for the sports equipment industry came from the production of balls and shuttlecocks. The Ministry of Industry noted that industrial exports of the two sports equipment throughout 2021 increased to USD 7.80 million compared to 2020 which reached USD 5.48 million. Currently, the medium-scale industry in the sports equipment sub-sector consists of 66 companies, with a workforce of 11,626 people. (LM)
