PLN to convert 499 MW of Diesel Power Plant

08 February 2022 09:41

JAKARTA – PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) (PLN) will convert 499 megawatts (MW) of Diesel Power Plant (lit. Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Diesel/PLTD) to Solar Power Plant (lit. Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Surya/PLTS) gradually until 2025 in regards to the new and renewable energy (NRE) resources mix program.

In a press release quoted Tuesday (8/2), Wiluyo Kusdwiharto, Director of Mega Projects and NRE of PLN, said that the energy conversion from PLTD to PLTS would be performed through a hybrid mechanism with the existing PLTDs. “The conversion will be done gradually. The first stage will involve converting 250 MW in several locations, and the second phase will convert 240 MW with other NRE power plants,” he explained.

According to Kusdwiharto, the conversion from PLTD will employ a baseload PLTS equipped with extra batteries to allow the plant to operate 24 hours non-stop. During the first phase of conversion, the installed capacity might reach 350 megawatt peak (MWp).

PLN also invites Corruption Eradication Commission (lit. Komisi Pemberantas Korupsi/KPK) to monitor the said PLTD-to-PLTS energy conversion project. (LK/ZH)
