JAKARTA - The automotive industry in the country will become an important player in the global supply chain, including efforts to produce electric cars. Moreover, Indonesia has enormous mineral resources to support the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.
"We are optimistic that Indonesia can become a vehicle manufacturer with low carbon emissions and environmentally friendly that is globally competitive. For this reason, acceleration steps are needed to build a strong and integrated ecosystem," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, Thursday (17/3).
The Minister of Industry said that the government is getting serious about developing the electric vehicle industry ecosystem from upstream to downstream. One way is through increased investment to strengthen the manufacturing structure in the country.
2022 will be a pivotal moment for the development of lithium batteries for electric vehicles. This is because several investors in Indonesia will start the construction of their factories in an effort to process nickel and cobalt into raw materials for lithium batteries.
"The government targets that by 2024 electric cars produced in Indonesia will already use electric batteries and also other important components produced in our country," said the Minister of Industry.
Furthermore, in the development of the electric vehicle industry ecosystem, the domestic automotive industry is targeted to produce 600 thousand electric cars and electric buses by 2030, so that with this figure it will be able to reduce fuel consumption by 3 million barrels and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4 million Tons.
The Ministry of Industry appreciates PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia for realizing its commitment to producing electric vehicles. This was marked by the launch of the IONIQ 5 electric car, which was inaugurated directly by President Joko Widodo. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first electric car made in Indonesia, to cater to the domestic and export markets. (LM)
