Ministry of Industry initiates hydrogen as energy source for the industrial sector

JAKARTA - Energy is at the heart of the competitiveness of the national industry. This is because industry is an energy-consuming sector in Indonesia, in the form of electricity, gas, coal to crude oil. Therefore, issues related to energy supply for industry have always been an important discussion.

The Ministry of Industry through the Directorate General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) has held a one-day seminar with the theme “Hydrogen Seminar for Industry: Challenges and Opportunities in Supporting Industrial Independence”.

"We hope that this activity can produce policies that support the use of hydrogen as a new energy and the development of clean energy-based industries, the arrangement of regulations and a roadmap for hydrogen applications for industry," said Director General of ILMATE Taufiek Bawazier in Jakarta, Wednesday (30/3).

According to Taufiek, Hydrogen is the future of energy for industry, and will be a game changer from world energy that will replace fossil energy and coal. This is because hydrogen is an energy carrier/energy transition factor that can be used to store, transfer, and distribute energy produced from other sources.

"In addition, the consideration of hydrogen development is the low cost of production in the future," he explained. In comparison, the production cost of green hydrogen reached USD2.5-4.5 per kg in 2019, and is projected to be USD1-2.5 per kg in 2030. "This will decrease by three times by 2050," he added.

Thus, Taufiek assesses, hydrogen as a fuel will be more economical and popular in the future. With this opportunity, the Ministry of Industry is ready to initiate the use of hydrogen as an energy source that can be utilized in the power generation industry, metal industry, food industry, and even the semiconductor industry in the future.
