Approaching Eid, KPPU monitors comestibles closely

04 April 2022 14:04

JAKARTA – The Indonesian Competition Commission (lit. Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha/KPPU) supervises the distribution and supply chain of 11 types of staple foods, preventing any unhealthy business competition nearing Eid Al-Fitr in early May 2022. Dinni Melanie, the Commissioner of KPPU, relayed the news in the press release quoted Monday (4/4).

“Until today, most comestibles are yet to indicate any signs of scarcity, save for red chili peppers,” Melanie revealed.

According to Melanie, the monitoring of the staple food supply and price will be conducted intensely, considering the recent case of massive shortage and price surge of cooking oils within consumers in late 2021. Additionally, the soaring tax and fuel oil price (BBM) in April 2022 is predicted to instigate unhealthy business competitions that may be detrimental for consumers.

Melanie stated that the work of KPPU branch offices in various regions will be optimised for any advocation and coordination with provincial government. Therefore, it might anticipate any potential price surges in comestibles. The business owners in the distribution chain are also required not to curb any food supply to the public. “Should any violations be detected, KPPU will exert legal enforcement as the law states,” she promised.
