Dairy processing industry is digitally transformed to support F&B sector

JAKARTA - The Minister of Industry stated that the food and beverage industry is one of the main drivers of national economic growth, supported by abundant natural resources and increasing domestic demand. "Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the food and beverage industry's GDP is still able to grow positively by 2.54% in 2021," Minister said.

One of the sectors supporting the outstanding performance of the food and beverage industry is the milk processing industry, which also receives development priorities according to the 2015-2035 National Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIN). "However, this industry is still faced with the challenge of meeting raw materials, because until now around 0.87 million tons or 21% of raw materials are Domestic Fresh Milk (SSDN)," said Agus.

Raw materials that are still imported from abroad include skim milk, whole milk, anhydrous milk fat, butter milk, and whey. "In the last five years, SSDN supply grew by an average of 0.9% per year, while industrial demand grew by 6% per year," he said.

The Ministry of Industry noted that most of the SSDN production came from Java, especially East Java with 534 thousand tons (56% of the total SSDN production), West Java with 293 thousand tons (31%), and Central Java with 100 thousand tons (11%). These three provinces contribute to 98% of the national fresh milk production.

Furthermore, in order to reduce dependence on imported milk raw materials, one of the steps that can be taken is to improve the supply chain flow of milk raw materials. Currently, transactions that occur between farmers and the Milk Processing Industry (IPS) at milk receiving points (TPS) and/or cooperatives are generally carried out manually or conventionally.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry has spurred several social studies to conduct pilot training in implementation of digital transformation at TPS-TPS and linked with its cooperatives, among others in several TPS under the Cooperative SAE Pujon Malang (assisted by PT. Nestle) and TPS-TPS under KPBS Pangalengan (assisted by PT. Frisian Flag Indonesia). (LM)
