JAKARTA – The number of investors in the capital market is reported to reach 8,397,538 investors at the end of March 2022, 12.13% higher than the number reported in March 2021 of 7,489,337 investors. This achievement indicates a consistent positive trend seen since March 2019 of only 2,484,354 investors.

Uriep Budhi Prasetyo, President Director of the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (lit. Kustodian Sentral Efek Indonesia/KSEI), mentioned that the higher number of investors resulted from the ease of opening an account for investors online. “There have been 34 security companies that provide online account since KSEI simplified the account opening method in 2019,” he explained in a press release quoted Thursday (14/4).

Approximately 80% of investors are local investors, categorised as millennials (27-42 years old) and generation Z (GenZ) (below 26 years old). The shares in the financial sector is the top choice of millennial and Gen Z investors, meanwhile the transportation sector is the least popular among the 12 investment sectors available in the market.

“The investment choices of millennials and Gen Z mostly lie on sectors with the highest capitalisation,” Prasetyo stated. (LK/ZH)
