JAKARTA - Ministry of Trade through the Indonesia Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) Vancouver together with the Ottawa Trade Attaché and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Ottawa, Canada, continues to encourage the marketing of Indonesian halal products in the global market.

This time, the promotion was carried out by participating in the Halal Expo Toronto 2022. This exhibition took place on 12-14 May 2022 and was attended by around 100 participants from Canada, Indonesia, Turkey, Portugal, India, Pakistan, and Malaysia. "Indonesia as a country with the largest Muslim community in the world has many halal product producers that need to be introduced to the world, one of which is the Canadian market. This exhibition is an event to promote Indonesian halal products in Canada, especially food and beverage products (mamin)," said Director General of National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade Didi Sumedi.

Canada is a country that is very open to immigrants, including those from Muslim countries. According to World Atlas data, the current population of Canadian Muslims is 1.7 million or 3.20 percent of the total Canadian population. With an estimated 15 percent increase in the Muslim population every year, the Canadian market is one of the markets for halal products in North America, which is valued at USD 1 billion per year.

"Indonesia's presence at this exhibition is part of a strategy to increase the value and share of Indonesia's export market in Canada by attracting and taking from the halal sector consumer niche. The target of increasing Indonesian exports in the Canadian market in 2022 is to grow 1.96 percent or reach USD 1.08 billion. The expected transaction target from this exhibition is USD 1.2 million or the equivalent of IDR 17.4 billion," said Indonesian Ambassador to Canada Daniel Tumpal Simanjuntak.

In 2020, Indonesia's export value for halal products to the world is estimated to reach USD 6 billion and is ranked 21st in the world. Meanwhile, Muslim fashion exports are estimated to reach USD 4.2 billion and occupy the top 13 in the world. Meanwhile, exports of Indonesian halal products are currently only around 3.8 percent of the total world market for halal products. Currently, Canada has not made a specific record for the export value of Indonesian halal products to Canada. (LM)
