JAKARTA - The Asahan 3 Hydroelectric Power Project (PLTA) with a capacity of 2x87 megawatts (MW) is targeted to operate in March 2024. The presence of the power plant project will reduce the Cost of Production (BPP) of electricity in the Sumatra system.

Wiluyo Kusdwiharto, Director of Mega Projects and New and Renewable Energy (EBT) of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) said that the progress of the power plant project has reached 55.44 percent so far. "The most important achievement of this project is the completion of a 7.75 kilometer (km) break through headrace tunnel," he said in a press release quoted on Monday (30/5).

According to him, his party is optimistic that in the next two years the plant can operate with the completion of the headrace tunnel, which is the critical path for the project. PLTA Asahan 3 utilizes water from Lake Toba, which will encourage an increase in the contribution of mixed energy from NRE by approximately 1.5%.

The project development applies a building information modeling application, which will later be useful for asset management. (LK/LM)
