JAKARTA. The car sales of PT Astra International Tbk (ASII) decreased 18.72% in May 2022 compared to April 2022. This depletion is due to less working days that May 2022 had compared to other previous months.

Boy Kelana Soebroto, Head of Corporate Communication of Astra International, added that Astra car sales in May 2022 were even lower than May 2021 sales. “The shorter working days in May 2022 affected the car sales,” he explained. In the official announcement, Soebroto also hoped that the car sales trend might continue to recover and reach the sales target set by Gaikindo (The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industry) this year.

Based on Gaikindo data, Astra car sales in May 2022 only arrived at 23,509 units, 18.72% lower than May 2021 sales of 28,373 units and lower than April 2022 sales of 46,498 units.

According to Soebroto, the highest sales were generated from Toyota and Lexus, clocking up to 213,412 units, depleting from 18,253 units in the same period last year. Daihatsu sales also shrank from 15,861 units in May 2021 to 6,981 units in May 2022. On the contrary, Isuzu brand’s sales increased year-on-year from 1,752 units to 2,481 units, as did UD Trucks’ from 33 units to 139 units and Peugeot’s from 25 units to 46 units.

Simlarly, Astra’s low-cost green car (LCGC) sales went up from 5,807 units in May 2021 to 6,442 units in May 2022. Unfortunately, its market share slipped off from 75% in April 2022 to 67% in May 2022. (AM/ZH)
