Ministry of Industry supports transition to electric vehicles to achieve net zero emissions

21 September 2022 12:28

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has determined the use of battery-based electric motorized vehicles (Battery Electric Vehicles) as official vehicles. This is also a manifestation of the commitment to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the Net Zero Emission target by 2060. This provision is contained in Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 7 of 2022 concerning the Use of Battery Electric Motorized Vehicles (Battery Electric Vehicles) as Operational Service Vehicles. and/or Individual Vehicles for Central Government Agencies and Regional Governments.

According to the Presidential Instruction, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is tasked with accelerating the production of various types of battery-based electric motorized vehicles (KBLBB), both motorcycles and four-wheeled or more motorized vehicles. This aims to meet the needs of the transformation from motorized vehicles to KBLBB.

“The Ministry of Industry is committed to supporting this transformation effort. This is in line with the KBLBB development roadmap that has been prepared by the Ministry of Industry," said Ministry of Industry spokesman Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, Tuesday (20/9).

With the acceleration of increasing KBLBB production, a spokesman for the Ministry of Industry said that ICE vehicles were still being produced in Indonesia. This is because Indonesia already has a KBLBB industry roadmap. In 2025, the number of KBLBB in Indonesia is targeted to reach 400 thousand units or 25% of the total production of four-wheeled vehicles which will reach 1.6 million units.

"Meanwhile, in 2035, the Ministry of Industry targets the production of 1 million four-wheeled KBLBB or more and 3.22 million two-wheeled KBLBB. The target is expected to save on the use of fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 12.5 million barrels/4.6 million tons for four-wheelers or more and 4 million barrels/1.4 million tons of CO2 for two-wheeled vehicles," said Febri. This means that the percentage of the number of KBLBB will continue to increase when compared to the number of ICE vehicles.

He added that until now, there have been four electric bus companies, three electric car companies, and 31 electric two-wheel and three-wheel companies with a total investment of IDR 1.872 trillion. The production capacity of electric vehicles per year in Indonesia currently reaches 2,480 units of buses, 14,000 units of electric cars, and 1.04 million units of electric two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicles.
