Indonesia-Japan strengthen cooperation in pharmaceutical and medical device industries

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to participate in efforts to strengthen the health sector, in particular spurring the development of the pharmaceutical industry and the medical device industry (farmalkes).

The Director General of Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Textile Industries (IKFT) Ignatius Warsito explained, the farmalkes industries are two of the seven sectors that receive development priorities according to the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap. The seven sectors are the food and beverage industry, automotive, chemical, textile and textile products, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

In order to accelerate efforts to develop the pharmaceutical industry, the Ministry of Industry is also actively supporting activities aimed at establishing comprehensive cooperation. For example, the implementation of the Indonesia-Japan Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Business Forum which took place on 5-7 October 2022 in Osaka, Japan.

The business forum activity is an initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Osaka, and supported by the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Health, and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), IIPC. Tokyo and ITPC Osaka, as well as several Japanese partners such as METI Kansai, Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Association of Japan (FPMAJ), and JETRO.

Head of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Penny K. Lukito also supported the strengthening of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in the pharmaceutical sector through a speech delivered via video conference. "The Indonesian market is a significant factor that attracts Japanese investors, for that I invite Japanese pharmaceutical industry players to establish wider collaboration with Indonesia through research and development of technology-based drugs," he explained.

This Business Forum resulted in a cooperation commitment signed by GPFI with partners in Japan, namely FPMAJ, in particular to open up opportunities for cooperation in the fields of research and development as well as co-production. "FPMAJ is honored to be present at today's business forum and looks forward to further collaboration with Indonesia in the field of Health," said Director General of FPMAJ, Toshihiko Miyajima.
