Sony and Honda establish JV to produce premium EV

JAKARTA - Sony Group Corp. and Honda Motor have formed a joint venture to produce electric vehicles. The joint venture company, Sony Honda Mobility, will sell electric vehicles online in the United States and Japan.

The plan, premium EV equipped with software systems from Sony will be delivered in 2026.

As reported by Reuters, Sony Honda Mobility has not disclosed information such as price, battery range and platform. However, Sony will provide software systems, ranging from onboard controllers to cloud-based services that will connect with entertainment and payment systems.

Sensors and other technologies for Level 3 autonomous driving systems will also be available. In Level 3 systems, also known as limited self-driving automation, drivers can ride without watching the road or handling the wheel on highway driving but need to be ready to take back control.

Honda will decide which platform to use as well as details such as battery suppliers. The still-to-be named EV will likely be produced by Honda at one of its plants in Ohio.

Yasuhide Mizuno, chairman and chief executive of the JV said Honda believes 2025 will be a crucial year in the shift towards EVsin the US market. (LM)
