JAKARTA - Leading consumer goods manufacturer PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk (UNVR) sees food and refreshment sector growing in Indonesia which will provide a significant opportunity for the company in upcoming years.
According to UNVR director Hemant Bakshi, "I think food and refreshment is an area of opportunity for us. If you look at our business and see our performance over the last five years, the contribution from foods and refreshments have grown and we believe it will continue to grow in the future as well."
During the company's public expose Bakshi made two predictions about food trend in Indonesia. His first prediction was consumption of packaged or ready to cook food will increase over the next few years. "More and more people will eat food which is made from packaged goods rather than cooking from scratch," commented Bakshi. Bakshi believes this will positively impact Unilever business through the sales of packaged products.
The second prediction Bakshi made was an increase in the variety of food styles, cuisines and types which would provide more interesting and more premium food products. He says, "As we get more connected to the rest of the world, there will be the opportunity to bring in foods which are different from what we are used to." He adds that these types of products will be more interesting, a majority of the Indonesian population will not know much about these products and that these products will carry a premium value.
Over the past five years, Bakshi realized a sales growth in Unilever's food and refreshment products. He believes this area of business will continue to grow and Unilever will need to make the most of the opportunity to not only capture consumers but also capture the moment. (CH)
