KULONPROGO - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is completing the construction of the Kulonprogo Airport Underpass or New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA). The underpass is built under the airport for 1.3 km which will be the longest underpass in Indonesia.

The construction of this underpass is intended to allow access to the Java South Coast National Road (Pansela) connecting Purwokerto and Yogyakarta because the construction of Kulonprogo Airport cuts off the old Pansela road. "The longest underpass is part of the Java Pansela National Road. In its construction, the security factor must be really considered," said Minister Basuki while reviewing the location of the recent underpass construction.

Minister Basuki asked the contractor, PT. WIKA and MCM (Joint Operation) to pay attention to aspects of underpass waterways to avoid flooding. Contractors were also asked to improve their work methods by taking into account Occupational Health and Safety (K3) and hygiene aspects.

Head of the National Center for National Road Implementation (BBPJN), Akhmad Cahyadi, said that the quality of the material will be monitored, especially concrete floors and walls to prevent leaks. Concrete walls and floors will be covered with Waterstop made of rubber and equipped with pump house facilities. This underpass will have a width of 7.85 meters, upper clearance of 5.2 meters and a side of 18.4 meters. The underpass wall will also be decorated with local wisdom themes such as the typical Yogyakarta batik motif to add aesthetic value.

Construction progress of the underpass that have been carried out since November 2018 has now reached 30% and is targeted for completion in December 2019. Development costs come from the State Sharia Securities (SBSN) / Budget Year 2018-2019 amounting to Rp 293.18 billion. (LM)
