JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) continues to increase the number of water reservoirs in various regions in Indonesia to increase Indonesia's water storage ratio, from the current 50 m3 /capita/year to reach 120 m3 /capita/year by 2030. In North Sulawesi, the Ministry of PUPR is building two dams, Kuwil Kawangkoan Dam in North Minahasa Regency and Lolak Dam in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, which can accommodate a total of 39.47 million m3 of water.

"At present, of the 7.3 million hectares of irrigated land, only 11% are getting water from dams. With the completion of 65 dams, it is expected to increase to 19-20%, said the Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono some time ago.

The Kuwil Kawangkooan Dam has a capacity of 23.37 million m3 and an inundation area of 139 Ha. This dam is useful for supplying raw water as much as 4.50 m3/s, as a flood controller (470 m3/s) and produce 1.4 MW of electricity. The dam was built since 2016 with an investment of 1.46 trillion. At present, the construction progress has reached 31.39% with the completion target in 2021.

Meanwhile, the construction progress of the Lolak Dam, which was started in 2016, has reached 57% and is targeted for completion by the end of 2020. The Lolak Dam, which has a capacity of 16.10 million m3 with an inundation area of 97.46 ha, becomes a source of water for an irrigation area of 2,214 ha,  while also produces 500 litres of raw water per second,  and become a source of power for a 3.3 MW power plant. The total investment on the dam is Rp 1.71 trillion. (LM)
