BNI ends partnerships with Alipay and WeChat Pay to focus on LinkAja

JAKARTA - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI) or BNI will discontinue its partnerships with Chinese digital wallets Alipay and WeChat Pay.

According to BNI CEO Achmad Baiquni, the partnerships will be discontinued because BNI seeks to focus on developing state-owned digital wallet LinkAja.

“BNI tried a pilot project, but it will be discontinued for now. We want to focus on developing LinkAja along with other Himbara (State-owned Banks Association) members,” said Mr Baiquni as quoted by Bisnis.com, Tuesday (26/11).

BNI, Mr Baiquni added, will focus on LinkAja due to the digital wallet’s large market network and customer base potential.

Currently BNI, PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (BMRI), and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI) each own a 20% stake in PT Finarya, which operates LinkAja. PT Telkomsel is the largest shareholder with a 25% stake, while the rest is owned by PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk (BBTN) and PT Pertamina with 7% each and PT Asuransi Jiwasraya (Persero) with 1%.
