JAKARTA. The coronavirus or COVID-19 may cause the hotel and restaurant sector to lose up to US$ 1.5 billion, according to the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI).

Hariyadi Sukamdani, Chair of PHRI, said the figure was calculated from the loss of visitors from China. Assuming the number of tourists from China in 2019 reached 2 million people, with total value of spending of US$ 1.1 billion.

Sukamdani added, the calculation did not yet involve sectors that support the sector. There are 500 types of business operations that support the sector, according to Sukamdani.

"The figure can also be worse if the people do not carry out activities," Sukamdani explained as reported by Kontan on Thursday (12/3) yesterday.

As a result, PHRI revised the growth target of the hospitality and tourism business to the level of 4.5% - 5.2%. (KR/AR)
