Food industry remains mainstay to contribute export forex earnings

JAKARTA - The food industry contributed US$4.7 billion to the total export value of the manufacturing industry from January to February 2020 which amounted to US$21.76 billion, larger than any other sector.

“The food industry was also the largest contributor to the total export value of the manufacturing industry in February 2020, which was recorded at US$2.45 billion,” said Head of the Ministry of Industry’s Data and Information Centre Janu Suryanto in an official statement, Monday (23/3).

The export value of the food industry in February was dominated by palm oil, whose export value reached US$1.51 billion with a contribution of 61.41%. The palm oil industry is one of the 15 export sectors prioritised by the Ministry of Industry.

In February, Mr Suryanto added, the US was the primary export destination for the manufacturing industry followed by China, Singapore, Japan, and India. Year on year, manufacturing export to the US grew 29.05%, China 16.81%, Singapore 57.50%, Japan 12.65%, and India 4.83%. (MS)
