JAKARTA - The Jakarta Municipal Government will impose large-scale social restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) starting Friday (10/4) until April 24, 2020.

The announcement was made by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in a press conference at the Jakarta City Hall, Tuesday (7/4) after Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto approved his request to impose such restrictions.

“We are all aware that we need participation from everyone to control the spread of COVID-19, which can be transmitted from one person to another. Therefore, it is very important to restrict interactions between people,” said Mr Baswedan.

In addition, the former Education Minister also said he had discussed the matter with the Jakarta Regional Leaders’ Communication Forum (Forkopinda).

In accordance with Government Regulation No. 21/2020 and Minister of Health’s Regulation No. 9/2020, during the period of restrictions schools and workplaces across Jakarta will be closed (except businesses that provide basic necessities such as shops and markets) as will places of worship.

Additionally, gatherings of more than five people will be forbidden including sporting, political, entertainment, academic, and cultural activities. The Jakarta government seeks to impose sanctions on anyone violating the restrictions. (MS)
