Indonesia wants ASEAN to fight COVID-19 together

JAKARTA - Indonesia is one of the countries that initiated the Special ASEAN Summit and the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit on COVID-19 which will take place through a video conference on Tuesday (14/4).

"We cannot postpone the summit when the world, including us, are fighting COVID-19. This Special Summit will be very strategic to synchronize our sets to fight COVID-19, " said Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi as quoted from Setkab.go.id page on Sunday (12/4).

The summit is expected to produce a declaration containing ASEAN's commitment to continue responding effectively to the pandemic through a coherent, multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder approach and involving the ASEAN community as a whole.

While the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit is expected to produce a joint statement that will affirm a joint commitment to strengthen solidarity,  cooperation, and mutual support between ASEAN and the APT countries in controlling, stemming and handling the impact of COVID-19. 

The Special ASEAN Summit will be chaired by the Prime Minister of Vietnam as Chair of ASEAN with 10 ASEAN countries participating, while the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit will also be joined by APT countries consisting of China, Japan, and South Korea. (LK/AR)
