JAKARTA - The government will try to increase shrimp production and export in order to make Indonesia as the top five fish exporters in the world. For this reason, additional shrimp farming centers and other supporting facilities are needed.

Safri Burhanuddin, Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Resources said that the goal cannot be reached without efforts to increase supporting facilities. "The efforts to increase shrimp production must be sustainable in terms of quality and quantity, and it must also support environmental sustainability in the area," he said during a visit to shrimp pond center in Aceh, as quoted from a press release on Thursday (16/7).

The visit was an effort to start the Technical Coordination Meeting and the National Shrimp Production Improvement Working Group. In Aceh, 18,000 hectares of large-scale shrimp ponds will be created and it is expected that the production rate can reach 5 tons per Ha.

According to him, the extensification of the pond land must be accompanied by the intensification of the pond, such as the implementation of appropriate technology in water and feed management. In addition, shrimp farmers need to pay attention to aspects of waste management. (LK/AR)
