Job Creation Omnibus Bill pays no regard to long-term impact, says Emil Salim

JAKARTA - The Job Creation Omnibus Bill has yet to consider the long-term impact of job creation as planned by the bill, said economist Dr Emil Salim.

“In my view, this bill only has short-term objectives with no long-term fundamentals that are suitable to the ecosystem,” Dr Salim said in an online discussion on Thursday (16/7) as quoted from Antara.

The bill, he added, would only exploit natural resources to create jobs without a long-term natural resource management plan.

Dr Salim, who held several ministerial posts during Suharto’s administration, said as an example that the government would open rice fields in Kalimantan and Papua, despite both regions being more suitable for other crops.

In addition, Dr Salim also said that the bill would cause investment in mineral and mining sectors to only consider economic impact without maximising conservation efforts such as reforestation. (MS)
