Indonesia's coal export volume declines by 11% YoY

JAKARTA. Indonesia's coal export volume in the first seven months of 2020 declined by 11% YoY, while its export value also declined by 22%.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded that the volume of coal exports was recorded at 238 million tons as of July 2020, 11% lower than the figure recorded last year (266 million tons).

According to Minister of ESDM Arifin Tasrif, the decline in coal export was due to the decline in coal demand in the global market due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Demand from India declined by 20%, while demand from South Korea also declined by 15%," said Arifin at the Save Indonesian Coal 2020 event on Monday (14/9).

The decision of major coal importer countries (India and China) to prioritize their domestic coal, also affected the figure. (AM/AR)
