JAKARTA. The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will make efforts to increase the total capacity of New and Renewable Energy (EBT)-based power plants in Indonesia by 16.7 Giga Watt (GW) over the next 10 years.

Arifin Tasrif, Minister of ESDM, said that the target is in accordance with the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) or PLN for 2019-2028.

Nevertheless, Tasrif admitted that there are still several challenges that the government must face. Starting from the economic value of EBT power plants, the intermittent nature of the plants, to the supply of energy sources. "There are several challenges in developing EBT power plants," said Tasrif in a press release received by idnfinancials.com.

On the other hand, the development of EBT power plants is still lagging behind compared to other power plants. The total capacity of geothermal power plants was recorded at 2.13 GW, lower than water-based power plants (6.56 GW). (KR/AR)
