JAKARTA - The pharmaceutical and medical equipment industry is one of the sectors capable of recording brilliant performance amidst the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is due to the high domestic demand for products from these two strategic sectors.

"Therefore, the Ministry of Industry is determined to realize the independence of the drug and medical device industry in Indonesia, and encourage this sector to become a major player and host in their own country," said the Director General of Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Textile Industry (IKFT) of the Ministry of Industry, Muhammad Khayam in a webinar entitled "The Effects of COVID-19, The Urgency of Health Sector Resilience", Monday (21/12).

The Director General of IKFT emphasized that the government has issued Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 6 of 2016 concerning the Acceleration of Development of the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Industry. The aim of the Presidential Instruction is to create independence for the pharmaceutical industry and national health devices, so that people can obtain drugs easily, affordably and sustainably.

The Ministry of Industry is taking strategic steps, namely building and developing a domestic medicinal raw material industry and developing an industry that produces Original Indonesian Modern Medicines (OMAI) made from domestic herbal plants. "This effort is expected to increase the TKDN of pharmaceuticals, so as to maximize the use of domestic drugs through drug procurement in the National Health Insurance (JKN) system," he explained.

Regarding medical device innovation, the Director General of IKFT said that the development of domestic ventilators continues. Currently it is run through a triple helix collaboration, namely industry, academia, and government. (LM)
