JAKARTA - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), targets to reach 1 million smart meter users, for electricity connections, by 2022.

Wanhar, Director of Engineering and Electricity Environment of Ministry of ESDM, said that the smart meter installation target was part of the on-grid electricity implementation plan. With this system, consumers of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) or PLN, could also be electricity producers.

In the meantime, the installation of smart meters will be focused for PLN users who have independent power plants. This was conveyed by Sugeng Prahoro, Coordinator of Electricity Consumer Protection, through a press release received by idnfinancials.com.

"The installation of Smart Meters is prioritised for potential consumers and suitable areas for the AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) infrastructure development," said Prahoro.

Prahoro estimated that the investment, for replacing postpaid meters with smart meters, would reach IDR 10 trillion. This projection was based on investment calculations for the next 15 years. (KR/VA)
