KKP optimizes Eastern Indonesia potential through seaweed cultivation

JAKARTA - Through the Ambon Marine Cultivation Fishery Center (BPBL), Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) explores the potential for development to the eastern tip of Indonesia, precisely in Yapen Islands Regency and Biak Numfor Regency, Papua Province.

Director General of Aquaculture, Slamet Soebjakto explained that the need for seaweed as a basic material in various industries makes this commodity one of the mainstays in cultivation activities.

"KKP continues to improve the performance of cultivated seaweed seeds by making various efforts to create innovations to produce quality seaweed seeds that support national seaweed production," said Slamet.

Slamet said that seaweed as one of the leading commodities has broad market prospects both domestically and as an export commodity, and even has a large contribution to the value of national exports.

Slamet also said that the direction of developing seaweed cultivation areas will optimize the potential lands in Eastern Indonesia. "We will build a seaweed village that applies environmentally friendly technology in order to improve community welfare in a sustainable manner," he concluded. (LM)
