JAKARTA – The revenue of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) decreased in Q1 2021 compared to Q1 2020, pre-COVID-19 period. The usage of trains as the chosen transportation mode for the public has reduced since the Large-Scale Social Distancing (PSBB) initiation in April 2020.

Didiek Hartantyo, the President Director of PT KAI (Persero), announced that the revenue was reported at IDR 3.44 trillion, 34.97% lower than IDR 5.30 trillion in Q1 2020. The condition also adversely affected its financial performance, yielding a loss of IDR 315.86 billion from last year’s profit of IDR 276.73 billion.

The passenger transportation segment could only add IDR 440.75 billion, plunging from the last year’s number of IDR 1.99 trillion. The economy class passengers’ sales, who have always been the main contributor to the revenue, only contributed IDR 275.48 billion, followed by the executive class of IDR 158.99 billion, then the business class of IDR 6.26 billion.

The freight transportation provided IDR 1.54 trillion for the revenue, declining from IDR 1.74 trillion. Then, the transportation and non-transportation support added IDR 113.33 billion and IDR 247.65 billion to the total revenue.

The compensation given by the government for KAI services amounted to IDR 962.57 billion, including the public service obligation of IDR 700.67 billion, the infrastructure maintenance obligation of IDR 252.02 billion, and the pioneering transport of IDR 9.87 billion. (LK/ZH)
