Sona Topas continues to claim losses due to Ngurah Rai Airport closedown

03 August 2021 08:51

JAKARTA – PT Sona Topas Tourism Industry Tbk’s (SONA) revenue keeps declining following the closing down of duty-free shops in Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar, due to the COVID-19.

Harry Wingidjaja, Director of Sona Topas Tourism Industry, reveals that his company only manages to score IDR 29.4 billion in revenue. It is significantly lower than IDR 224.2 billion reported in the same period last year. However, the loss in H1 2021 slides off to IDR 54.9 billion from IDR 64.52 billion last year.

“The government still put restrictions on foreign tourists since March 2020. The stagnation in performance is due to the inaccessible international flights in Bali,” Wangidjaja explains further through the public expose published today (3/8).

According to Wangidjaja, the company continues to perform efficiencies in operational activities throughout the pandemic. They include dismissing employees in stages. As of March 2021, the employees only consist of 607 people, diminishing from 649 people in December 2020 and 1,362 people in December 2019.

SONA is running Sona Tour travel service, duty-free shops, and retails. Until March 2021, it only scores IDR 12.05 billion in operating revenue, taking a massive downturn of 94.56% from IDR 221.80 billion reported in the same period in 2020. However, its loss improves to IDR 24.85 billion from IDR 43.21 billion reported in the same period last year. (LK/ZH)
