JAKARTA - In the midst of heavy pressure due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the national furniture industry is still able to show a brilliant performance. This is reflected in the export value of the furniture industry in 2020 amounting to USD 2.19 billion, an increase of 12.2% compared to the achievement in 2019.

"Meanwhile, in the period January to August 2021, the export performance of the furniture industry continues to provide good news, with an increase of 30.8% compared to the same period in 2020," said Plt. Director General of Small, Medium and Multifarious Industries (IKMA) of the Ministry of Industry, Reni Yanita in Jakarta, Sunday (26/9).

Reni said that some of the main export destinations for furniture products from Indonesia were the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and England. “This indicates that our furniture products are already competitive in the global arena. Moreover, our furniture products are considered unique and innovative because of the breakthroughs made by industry players in order to be competitive," she said.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry is determined to continue to develop small and medium industry players (SMI) in the furniture sector. One strategy is to implement a partnership pattern between SMI and large industry or medium industry as part of building a supply chain ecosystem so as to increase efficiency in the production process.

In order to support the furniture SME sector to increase productivity and quality, thereby spurring the expansion of the export market, the Ministry of Industry has a program to restructure production machinery and equipment. This effort is in line with encouraging SMEs to take advantage of the latest technology. (LM)
