JAKARTA – The user of contactless payments or QR Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) increased by 6.2 million merchants from January to October 2021. The total QRIS users now reached 12 million users from 5.8 million merchants in 2020.

Perry Warijyo, Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor, mentioned that QRIS-based payments attracted enthusiasm from several business sectors as it enhanced efficiencies, accelerated inclusive finance, and minimise COVID-19 spread. “Since its implementation in January 2020, BI has been working on strengthening the QRIS user policy to drive the acceleration of economic digitalisation and financial inclusivity, as well as promote the government’s program,” he added in the press release, quoted Thursday (4/11).

According to Warijyo, the rapid shift in business sectors to this payment method resulted from the support of several parties. They include Indonesia Payment System Association (lit. Asosiasi Sistem Pembayaran Indonesia/ASPI), Payment Service Provider (lit. Penyedia Jasa Pembayaran/PJP), central, and regional government.

Santoso Liem, President of ASPI, stated that ASPI is committed to supporting QRIS utilisation in various business sectors to boost financial inclusivity. ‘With the broad network in many regions, we are set to lead the community to enter the digital finance era,” he further proclaimed. (LK/ZH)
