21 January 2022 07:23

JAKARTA – Indonesia had reportedly restored peatlands of 3.74 million hectares (ha) from 2016 to 2021. President Joko Widodo made this announcement during the virtual dialogue with Klaus Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), in Jakarta yesterday (20/1).

In this dialogue, the Head of State said that the mangrove rehabilitation covered 50 thousand ha of land in the past two years. By 2024, the peatlands and mangrove restoration is targeted to cover 600 thousand ha. This result will be the vastest rehabilitated area coverage in the world, capable of holding carbon four times better than tropical forests. “When calculating below-ground mangroves, it can be 10 to 12 times higher,” he explained.

The President then listed several measures and strategies of the government in order to actualise the green economy as stated in the National Medium Term Development Plan (lit. Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional/RPJMN) of 2020-2024. (LK/ZH)
