Indonesia’s foreign debt shrank 3.4% in Q2 2022

JAKARTA. Bank Indonesia (BI) reported the foreign debt in the second quarter of 2022 to reach USD 403 billion, which was USD 9.6 billion or 3.4% lower than the number recorded in the previous quarter of USD 412.6 billion.

Executive Director and Head of Communication Department of Bank Indonesia, Erwin Haryono, believed that this situation was developed following the downturns in foreign debts owed by both public (government and central bank) and private sectors.

Haryono said that the foreign debt of the government finally decreased following the successful repayment of bilateral, commercial, and multilateral loans due from April to June 2022.

“The repayment of maturing domestic government securities also contributed to the lower foreign debt of the government in the second quarter of 2022,” Haryono added. For the record, the government’s debt in Q2 2022 arrived at USD 187.3 billion, shifting from USD 196.2 billion in Q1 2022.

According to Haryono, this current financial position is relatively safe and under control as most of outstanding financial obligations, approximately 99.7% of the total foreign debt, have a long period of tenor. (AM/ZH)
