WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump is once again under global scrutiny after suffering open humiliation by two influential figures—one in the Oval Office, and the other across the digital sphere.

As reported by The Daily Beast on Thursday (5/6), the dual rebukes were described by MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell as “an unprecedented moment in the history of the American presidency.”

The first embarrassment came from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who during an official meeting at the White House, was compelled to correct Trump’s statement regarding the D-Day anniversary.

Trump had referred to D-Day as “a bad day for Germany.”

Merz calmly replied, “In the long run, Mr President, it was the liberation of my country from the Nazi regime.”

The remark, made before the international press, drew widespread praise for its firm yet diplomatic tone.

But the political drama did not end there. At the same time, tech magnate Elon Musk launched a frontal assault on Trump via social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In a string of posts, Musk called for Trump’s impeachment, criticised his tariff policies as likely to trigger a year-end recession, and claimed that Trump’s 2024 election victory would not have occurred without multibillion-dollar donations from Musk himself.

Even more explosively, Musk alleged that the real reason documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein sexual abuse case remain sealed is because Trump’s name is suspected to be among them.

The allegation has sparked new waves of speculation and public uproar.

On his programme The Last Word, Lawrence O’Donnell observed: “Donald Trump has become the first president in history to be humiliated by two individuals simultaneously—one in the same room, and one thousands of miles away.”

He added, “Trump is now at the centre of a storm entirely of his own making.”

Tensions between Trump and Musk are continuing to escalate. Trump has called for all government contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, to be terminated.

Musk, for his part, has doubled down on his impeachment calls. Even Trump’s ally Steve Bannon weighed in, demanding that Musk be deported from the United States.

Merz’s blunt rebuttal joins a growing list of European leaders publicly correcting or opposing Trump’s statements. French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously done the same.

O’Donnell concluded his commentary by calling Trump “the dumbest president any European leader has ever encountered.” (EF)
