JAKARTA: Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed US$927 million at the global box office during its opening weekend. Of the total, US$355 million came from the United States and Canada.

As reported by Reuters, citing Rentrak data, the film recorded the second biggest opening weekend of all time, both in the North American domestic market and globally.

The top spot is still held by Avengers: Endgame, which generated an opening weekend gross of around US$1.6 billion worldwide in 2019.

The latest Spider-Man film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, follows Peter Parker as he once again battles crime in a world that has forgotten his identity as Spider-Man.

Tom Rothman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Motion Picture Group, said the film's central theme of friendship was its greatest strength.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day is fundamentally a film about friendship, about the comfort and strength of the bonds that connect us all, and that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages around the world."

Outside North America, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned US$572 million, with China emerging as the largest international market after generating US$121 million in ticket sales.

The film also received a positive response, earning a 90% critics' score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at Rentrak, said the Spider-Man franchise is now approaching US$10 billion in global box office revenue.

Meanwhile, Enact Insight Founder and Chief Executive Officer Greg Durkin said the film's themes of loneliness, isolation and human connection were key factors behind its appeal, particularly among Generation Z audiences.

"There is currently a mental health crisis among young people in our country, especially among young men. There is a friendship crisis."

"The pandemic created many ripple effects that we have yet to fully document, let alone address. This film touches on several themes that are incredibly important."

The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, together with The Odyssey, helped North American cinemas record the biggest box office weekend in history.

"There could not have been a better lead-in to this film than The Odyssey. Just imagine how many people around the world were sitting in cinemas and exposed to the marketing trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day."

Despite the record weekend, cumulative North American box office revenue remains 16% below 2019 levels, although it has increased 10% compared with the same period last year. (DH/LM)
