JAKARTA – The proportion of outbound Indonesian tourist visits to China rose by 2.22 percentage points month-on-month in April 2025, the highest increase among the top five overseas destinations.

This rise in travel occurred while China was grappling with a tariff war with the United States.

From January to April 2025, outbound trips totalled 3.25 million, up 10.65% from 2.94 million in the same period last year.

In April 2025, Malaysia was the most visited country by Indonesian tourists, accounting for 256,760 visits or 27.71% of the total.

It was followed by Saudi Arabia, absorbing 15.95% of visits, down from 20.19% in the previous month.

Singapore drew 13.46% of Indonesian tourists, down from 14.08%. Visits to China rose from 6.17% to 8.39%, while visits to Japan increased from 3.91% to 5.50%.

As previously reported, US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs against several trading partners in early April, with rates of 32% on Indonesia and 125% on China. (LK/KR/ZH)
