JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) pairs up with Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) to develop rig-to-carbon-capture-storage (CCS), a technology of utilising idle offshore oil and gas platform as CCS.

In the press release quoted Thursday (11/1), Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina, mentioned that the joint development of rig-to-CCS is a measure to support Net Zero Emission (NZE) in 2060. “It is a collaboration to solve Indonesia’s issues that lie on abandonment and site restoration of offshore platforms,” she explained.

This joint agreement with KNOC was signed by Nicke Widyawati and Dong Sub Kim, President & CEO of KNOC, in Seoul yesterday (10/1).

According to Widyawati, many offshore oil and gas platforms are now underutilised after oil and gas production was terminated. Rig-to-CCS is an efficient way to reutilise offshore oil and gas platforms. “The cost of conventional ASR or decommissioning is high, thus calling for an alternative,” she added.

In the future, this collaboration with KNOC may be extended to rig-to-wind-farm, rig-to-fish-farm, and rig-to-LNG-terminal. (LK/ZH)
