JAKARTA – Indonesian citizens will soon be able to make transactions using the rupiah currency in China and Japan through cross-border Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS).

According to Bank Indonesia (BI), this payment feature will be available starting 17 August 2025.

Deputy Governor of BI, Filianingsih Hendarta, said the preparation for implementing cross-border QRIS in China and Japan has gone through several trial phases in cooperation with local authorities since May 2025.

“If there are no significant obstacles, we expect to launch this outbound QRIS on 17 August,” Filianingsih said during a press conference last week.

Several Indonesian switching companies have also partnered with Union Pay International to develop the system.

Moreover, BI is exploring similar cooperation with several neighbouring countries including India, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. (KR/ZH)
