MSCI new review due, will Indonesia stay an emerging market?
JAKARTA – MSCI is set to release the results of its 2026 annual review of global capital market accessibility and classifications this month.
In its most recent review in June 2025, the global index provider placed Indonesia in the emerging market category.
According to an announcement released on 21 May, MSCI will publish its Global Market Accessibility Review 2026 on 18 June. The results of the Annual Market Classification Review 2026 will follow on 23 June.
“Both announcements will be released after 10:30 PM CEST,” MSCI said in its statement.
In its official explanation, MSCI said the market accessibility review is intended to assess various factors related to the ease of access for global investors, while the annual classification review serves as the basis for determining each country’s market category.
Under MSCI’s current classification framework, Indonesia is included in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) emerging markets group alongside China, India, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific markets classified as Developed Markets are Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Frontier Markets in the region include Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Analysts at BRI Danareksa Sekuritas believe the outcome of the review will be closely watched by investors, as it could influence capital flows in the equity market. This wait-and-see approach has weighed on the performance of the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI).
“In the near term, market attention will focus on developments in rupiah stability, the government’s response to pressure in the financial markets, and the outcome of the global index review, which could affect foreign capital flows,” BRI Danareksa Sekuritas analysts said in a research note released today.
